Third win over Catonsville puts Dulaney in state semis

It's no easy task beating a team as good as the No. 14 Catonsville boys lacrosse team. Beating the Comets twice in one season is an even taller order, and beating them three times is really asking a lot.

"It's really hard to beat a team like that three times in a year," coach Jake Reed of No. 8 Dulaney said. "You can't hide anything from either team. You know the personnel, you know the tendencies, so you just have to play."

Last night, the Lions had the undesirable task of having to beat the Comets again to advance to the Class 4A-3A state semifinals, and they did, winning, 15-12.

The victory lifted Dulaney (16-2) to the 4A-3A South regional title, the program's 14th straight regional championship. The Lions also beat the Comets, 9-5, in the regular season and, 9-6, last week for the Baltimore County championship.

"They're a great team, and I give them all the credit in the world," senior midfielder Jay Mann said. "They have a lot of great players, and they're going to be really good next year. Our team really stepped up and we know that our ultimate goal is to win the state championship."

Mann finished with three goals and two assists. Spencer Martin scored three goals and had four assists, and Kevin Tignall chipped in with three goals. Skip Clary and Matt Reymann led the Comets (11-5) with three goals apiece.

Dulaney appeared to be in control, holding a 12-6 lead with eight minutes left in the game, but the Comets went on a tear, scoring four goals in less than two minutes.

Nikko Gurnsey (two goals, one assist) scored with 7:14 left. Clary dodged a defender and scored in the top left corner of the net at 6:23 and followed that up by winning the next faceoff and scoring another goal 22 seconds later. Brian Sommer scored with 5:47 left to cut the lead to 12-10.

Alex Peddicord scored for Dulaney with 4:31 left, but Reymann answered with a man-up goal with 3:46 remaining. Tignall scored for Dulaney, and Gurnsey matched him to make the score 14-12 with 2:48 left.

The Comets couldn't get any more good shots, and Mann's goal with 20 seconds left sealed the game for the Lions.

• No. 13 Winters Mill 16, Middletown 10 // McKenzie Cyr and Erin McMunn both scored four goals to power the host Falcons (15-2) past the Knights in 3A-2A West. Winters Mill faces Centennial at Annapolis High School in the semifinal tomorrow or Saturday.

• Towson 14, North Harford 6 // Kara Glazer scored four goals to power the host Generals past the Hawks in a 3A-2A North semifinal. Towson hosts Hereford at 4 p.m. today

• Catonsville 19, Dulaney 10 // The Comets (11-6) rebounded from an early deficit to defeat the Lions (12-4) and capture the 4A-3A South region title. With Dulaney leading 4-3, the Comets scored six consecutive goals to take a 9-4 lead into the half and cruised from there. Becca Reymann had a game-high six goals to lead the Comets.
