All-Howard County: Softball
PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Stephanie Speierman, Hammond
In earning a second straight county Player of the Year honor, Speierman once again set herself apart from the rest with a combination of dominant pitching and productive work at the plate.
In leading the Golden Bears to the county championship game, the junior went 18-4 with a 0.84 ERA and 354 strikeouts in 159 innings.
Included in her 18 wins were nine no-hitters, one of which was a perfect game. Despite being pitched around often (she walked 26 times), Speierman batted .418 with 23 runs and eight RBIs.
COACH OF THE YEAR: Maureen Shacreaw, Atholton
The task at hand for Shacreaw was blending a hardworking returning group with a talented freshmen crop and two gifted transfers from California, A.J. and Chelsea Ponce. It turned out to be an impressive mix that far exceeded expectations, as the Raiders (17-6) went from four wins in 2007 to a surprise trip to the Class 3A title game.
Shacreaw said a turning point came in a characterbuilding 1-0, eight-inning win over then-defending Class 2A state chamion Hammond on April 18. The Raiders took a nine-game game winning streak into the state final before falling to Calvert County power Northern, 7-0.
