All-Howard County: Girls track
PERFORMER OF THE YEAR: Anna Demaree, River Hill
What a year for a freshman
--or anyone, for that matter.
Demaree burst onto the
scene in style, winning three
races and running on a winning
relay at the Howard
County championships. She
then won two races, took second
in another and ran on a
victorious 800 relay team at
the Class 2A South regional
meet.
At the state meet, Demaree
finished second in the 800
and 1,600 and third in the
3,200. She combined with
Katie Harman to give the
Hawks two of the best distance
runners on one team
in the state.
COACH OF THE YEAR: Earl Lauer, River Hill
Lauer is a take-charge
coach, and he did a fine job
reviving the Hawks' outdoor
team this year. They finished
11th in the Howard County
title meet last year, but he
turned things around quickly
this spring. Lauer worked
at using his versatile athletes
to score points in a variety of
ways.
That played a big role in
helping the Hawks win the
Howard County title and
come close to taking the
Class 2A state crown. River
Hill finished second, but it
led for long stretches at the
meet.
