All-Howard County: Boys track
PERFORMER OF THE YEAR: Joey Thompson, Howard
He wrapped up his career
at Howard with another
spectacular season. Thompson
won the 1,600 (4 minutes,
18.66 seconds) at the
county meet with a strong
late move against Atholton's
Graham Bazell. He finished
second in the 3,200 to Bazell
at that meet as well as at the
statemeet. At states, Thompson
nearly caught Bazell
with a furious finishing kick
on the final lap, going in an
outright sprint after running
nearly two miles, an effort
that turned heads even
though he came up short.
Thompson was impressive
in taking the 1,600 at the
Class 2A state meet in
4:20.74, edging Bazell. The
battles Thompson had with
Bazell were some of the
area's best over the past two
years.
COACHES OF THE YEAR: Matt Gitterman and Tony Bell, Mount Hebron
The Vikings turned things
around in one year. They finished
eighth at last year's
county championship meet
and weren't much of a
threat. But Gitterman and
Bell came up with ways for
Mount Hebron to score
points in various places,
which played a big role in the
Vikings' winning the county
title this year.
They continued to find success
after that by taking second
in the Class 2A South regional
meet. Jackson Jordan
and Zach Weinstein helped
lead the way, but the Vikings
have become a more well-rounded
team and have laid
the foundation for the future.
