All-Howard County: Baseball
PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Ben Winter, Centennial
Perhaps the best pitcher and best hitter in Howard County, Winter repeats as the county's Player of the Year after another stellar season. The two-way standout senior was 6-2 with two no-hitters and a 2.12 ERA this season, yielding only 11 earned runs. The left-hander gave up only 16 hits, struck out 59 and walked 25 in 36ß innings for the Eagles.
The Eagles' center fielder when not pitching, Winters batted .400 with seven doubles, five triples, two homers, 27 runs and 22 RBIs. Strong defensively, Winter expects to play the outfield at Towson University.
COACH OF THE YEAR: Paul Eckert, Marriotts Ridge
In the second varsity season of the school's three-year existence, Eckert led the Mustangs to the Howard County championship and the Class 2A state final, where they lost a close one.
Eckert, a former assistant at Atholton, transformed an 8-14 team that lost in the Class 1A state semifinals in 2007 into an 18-6 team that nearlywon it all in 2A.
The No. 15 Mustangs defeated perennial contender Centennial, 5-2, in the county championship game. Then they knocked off three teams -- two by shutout, one a nohitter by Tim Blair -- to win the Class 2A South Regional. In the 2A state semifinals, Marriotts Ridge suffered a 15-10 loss to South Hagerstown, but Eckert later discovered that South Hagerstown had violated the state rules on pitching limitations.
The Mustangs received a forfeit and played in the state final, where they lost to Kent Island, 6-5, on a squeeze play in the bottom of the seventh.
