Boys Lacrosse: Class 2A-1A State Championship
Gladiators turn it up for title
A sloppy first half in last night's Class 2A-1A state championship game - poor passing, miscommunications and an offense that produced just one goal - challenged Glenelg boys lacrosse coach Josh Hatmaker to find a way to calm his team down.
The pressure of a bid for a second consecutive state title and the maintenance of an undefeated season burdened the No. 6 Gladiators against Southern-Anne Arundel at UMBC. But Glenelg finally took control in the second half and pulled away for a 7-4 victory.
"We have a bunch of seniors who have been here before, so it was their leadership [that made the difference]," Hatmaker said. "We wanted to finish it off and give these guys two straight championships. That's something special."
Chris Gotschall led Glenelg (18-0) with three goals, Tyler Burford added two and Ryan Dougherty and Josh Braun finished with one apiece. Daniel Dowd scored three goals for Southern, and Jimmy Gibbons recorded the other.
Southern (10-7) took advantage of Glenelg's uneven play in the first quarter by creating several effective chances off unforced turnovers. Dowd gave Southern the lead with his 34th goal of the year with 14 seconds left in the first quarter.
Glenelg finally got on the board with 43 seconds left in the first half on a low shot by Dougherty. Dowd answered with his second goal 12 seconds later and Southern took a 2-1 lead into halftime.
"I don't think any of us were worried, especially on offense," Gotschall said. "Eventually, we were going to score because we were getting a lot of good shots off. We just had to put some in."
