Girls Lacrosse Class 4a-3a State Championship
Falcons perfect again after dismissing Comets
Severna Park polished off a rare lacrosse double last night in the state Class 4A-3A championship game at UMBC.
Not only did the No. 2 Falcons win their second straight state crown, 17-6, over No. 15 Catonsville, but they did so with another undefeated record. Over the past two years, the Falcons have gone 40-0.
"For this year, it's definitely the same feeling to just win and be 20-0 again for the whole season," Falcons defender Theresa Zichelli said.
"It's different, though, because we're the seniors this year and we were the leaders of the team, so to bring the whole team to another state championship is always a good feeling."
The Anne Arundel County champions took a 12-1 lead on Hayley Rausch's goal to open the second half. The Comets never got closer than 13-4 on Rebecca Reymann's goal midway through the second half.
Julie Gardner scored six goals and Jaci Gassoway added four for Severna Park, which added an eighth state title to its resume. Only one team has won more: Mount Hebron with 15.
The Comets, who were seeking their second state crown but their first since 1996, had pulled off a couple of upsets in the previous rounds.
Catonsville knocked off Dulaney, the 2005 and 2006 champion that had been a finalist last season, in the regional final and previously unbeaten Wootton in the state semifinal.
But last night, the Comets (12-7) simply could not counter the Falcons' high-powered offense.
Catonsville coach Dorothy Gill said her game plan was to slow things down and use the clock. While that worked in the opening minutes as Abby Sneeringer gave the Comets a 1-0 lead, they couldn't maintain it.
"They put a lot of pressure on me, Abby and Becca, so it was really hard for us to get an offense working," Comets senior Jessica Nonn said.
"Because even when we made our cuts, they were sagging on us, so we were trying to take it one-on-one and that wasn't working too well because they were right there on the slides."
