Hayes rushed for 266 yards and four touchdowns in leading the No. 12 Wildecats to a 26-6 victory at North Harford for the Class 3A East regional title Friday.
It was the first time Wilde Lake (10-2) had advanced to the state final four since 1997.
Hayes scored on runs of 1, 32, 53 and 74 yards. His first three touchdowns were in the first half. He also caught an 18-yard pass, returned two kicks for 48 yards and had 326 all-purpose yards.
North Harford coach Ken Brinkman said Hayes "was amazing and probably the best player we've seen this year."
Named an All-County defensive end last season by the Howard County coaches, Hayes, a 6-foot-1, 205-pound junior, was named an All-County running back this year.
Hayes heads into Friday's Class 3A state semifinal at Damascus (11-1) in Montgomery County with 1,256 yards and 18 touchdowns on 147 carries. He averages 8.5 yards per carry.
In the spring, Hayes is a sprinter on the Wildecats' outdoor track team, competing in the 100, 200 and 220.
Others considered: Keon Adams, Joppatowne, football; Travis Crane, Eastern Tech, football; Mike Inyang, Arundel, football; Leon Kinnard, Loyola, football; Zach Martin, River Hill, football.
