Jonathan Perry, Dunbar, football
Boys Athlete of the Week
When star running back Tavon Austin went down with an injured left side late in the first quarter of the Class 1A state semifinal on Saturday at Poly, quarterback Perry stepped up to lead the Poets to a 34-8 rout of South Carroll.
Perry completed nine of 18 passes for a career-high 280 yards and three touchdowns in leading the defending Class 1A state champion and No. 2 ranked Poets (13-0) into the final Saturday vs. Allegany (13-0). Sean Farr caught 51- and 37-yard touchdown passes from Perry, and Donovan Brooks scored on 5-yard pass from the quarterback.
Perry's three touchdown passes got the Poets out to a 22-0 third-quarter lead. All season, with Austin scoring 36 touchdowns, 29 of them rushing, Perry has been a model of consistency at quarterback. Opponents who keyed on Austin knew that Perry was a threat to burn them with his passing.
In 13 games, Perry has completed 101 of 172 passes (58.7 percent) for 2,058 yards and 20 touchdowns while being intercepted just seven times.
