Boys golf: All-Metro team
Jason Clatworthy, St. Vincent Pallotti
He shot slightly more than 36 per round for the season and only lost half of a point during the regular season. The junior had an impressive showing at the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association individual championships, where he finished third behind Patrick Hohman of Boys Latin and Brad Miller of Gilman.
Josh Eure, South River
Eure finished fourth in the state and was two birdie putts from gaining at least a tie for the title. The junior also won the Fall Preview tournament, which featured private and public schools, by shooting a 72. He finished second in District V. "He was more consistent this last year," South River coach Bruce Bowen said.
Brad Miller, Gilman
Miller played outstanding golf all year and finished second in the MIAA individual championships after losing in a playoff to Patrick Hohman. He was a team captain who led by example. Miller, a senior, averages one birdie every three holes he plays. "He has been tremendous in our matches against the best player from each team in our league," coach Don Rogers said. He is playing golf at the University of Richmond in the fall.
Brandon Powers, Bel Air
Powers was a four-year
varsity player and a team
captain for Bel Air, which
won its league championship.
The senior made an
impressive run in the state
tournament at the University
of Maryland, eventually
finishing second to Alex
Hoffman of Middletown after
36 holes and a sudden-death
playoff. He carries a
3.71 grade point average.
Tim Prey, St. Paul's
Prey, a three-year starter,
finished fourth in the MIAA
A Conference individual
championships. He also
placed third in the prestigious
North-South Junior
Am at Pinehurst. The senior
was team captain for the
second consecutive year
and played at No. 1 for St.
Paul's the past two years.
He had a 73.58 scoring average.
"Tim's leadership this
year was invaluable," St.
Paul's coach Richard Collins
said. "Not only did he lead
by playing extremely well,
[but] he helped an inexperienced
squad reach the
semifinals of the MIAA."
Hunter Rief, Gilman
Rief is one of the longest
hitters in the metro area.
Known as a top competitor
in match play, Rief held the
No. 3 spot for Gilman's 14-1
MIAA championship team.
The junior was selected as
one of eight players on the
American Schoolboy Golf
team sponsored by Blair
Academy in New Jersey
that will tour Great Britain
for three weeks this summer.
"He is an excellent
golfer ... no weaknesses in
his game," coach Don Rogers
said.
John Rosecrans, Liberty
Rosecrans, a senior,
played No. 1 for a Liberty
team that won the county,
conference and district
state titles. At states, he
shot a 78 and 77 in the two
rounds. The state title was
the first for any Carroll
County school in golf. "He
has just been a solid player
all around," coach Paul Bangle
said. "He had one of the
lowest scoring averages in
the county. He was our captain
and our leader."
Casey Taylor, Calvert Hall
A freshman, he only lost
one match all season and
accumulated 34 out of a
possible 36 points in his
matches. He will probably
play No. 1 for the team the
next three years. He finished
fourth in the MIAA individual
championships.
Calvert Hall finished runner-
up to Gilman in the
MIAA A Conference team
championship.
Chris Wellde, Centennial
Wellde finished a remarkable
career at Centennial by
winning the Howard County
individual county championship,
the individual regional
championship and
placing eighth in the state
tournament. The senior
also helped Centennial to
go undefeated in 30 county
matches.Wellde shot a 72 in
the Maryland qualifier for
the Trusted Choice Big I
Classic in Idaho, and qualified
for the National Championship
in Boise, Idaho.
