All-Anne Arundel County: Boys basketball
Player of the Year
Brad Bald
Severna Park
A transfer from Archbishop Spalding, Bald, 6 feet 8, fit right in at Severna Park and established himself as the county's best big man.
Bald, who committed to UNC-Wilmington after getting 20 scholarship offers while playing Amateur Athletic Union ball last summer, averaged 17.3 points, 12.8 rebounds and 3.8 blocked shots for the Falcons (16-8). His 308 rebounds are the second-highest single-season total in Falcons history.
Scoring in double digits in every game, Bald had 20 double doubles as he teamed up with his brother, junior Brendan Bald, to fuel the Severna Park offense. Bald will play for the Baltimore team in the upcoming Charm City Challenge.
Coach of the Year
Jeff Starr
Arundel
After serving as an assistant boys coach at Annapolis and then as the Panthers' head girls coach, Starr took over at Arundel and turned the Wildcats into an instant contender.
Starr took a group that was 13-11 last season and transformed it into a 19-6 team that made its first county championship game since the contest began in 1996 and the Class 4A East regional semifinals.
Taking advantage of his team's speed, Starr employed an up-tempo style that had the Wildcats wearing down opponents.
Arundel defeated No. 11 Old Mill, 89-74, in the regular season but lost to the Patriots, 74-70, in the county final. The Wildcats' season ended in a 94-82 loss to eventual 4A East champion and state runner-up Thomas Stone.
