Mullan, Wedell combine to make strong impact for Shippensburg softball

Freshman outfielder Jill Mullan and junior catcher Rachelle Wedell, both from Northeast High in Anne Arundel County, have been starting all season for the traditionally strong Shippensburg softball team.
Mullan began her collegiate career by collecting three hits in four at-bats in a 9-1 victory over Wheeling Jesuit in a Feb. 29 season opener. Mullan has gone on to compile a .274 batting average with four doubles, one triple, six RBIs, and three stolen bases in three attempts through Sunday's games.
Wedell is hitting .224, has three doubles and 11 RBIs, and her defensive play behind the plate has been nearly flawless, making one error all season for a .995 fielding percentage.
Through Sunday's games, Shippensburg was 24-18 overall and 7-7 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.
The 6-foot-9, 255-pound Owens, a fourth-year junior, has a 4.58 ERA, 18 strikeouts and 15 walks. The Spiders were 15-19-1 overall through Tuesday and 6-6 in the Atlantic 10.
Owens took a medical redshirt last season after pre-season arm surgery followed a 2006 sophomore year that was limited to four early season starts by an elbow injury. He was 1-1 as a sophomore, with 15 strikeouts in 20 innings and a 1.80 ERA.
As a freshman, Owens had a 5-2 record to lead Spiders starters in winning percentage, and he was second on the staff with a 3.75 ERA in 74 1/3 innings.
Lolley had two goals and one assist Saturday, and Schroeder got his first point of the season in the team's victory over McDaniel, running Muhlenberg's winning streak to four.
Lolley was second on the Mules in scoring with 14 goals and two assists through last weekend. Schroeder was second on the team in ground balls with 24, and he recorded his first assist of the season Saturday against McDaniel.
With a victory over Ursinus on April 26, Muhlenberg would clinch its first Centennial Conference lacrosse playoff spot.
He scored the tying goal with 0.7 of a second left in regulation play, and the Tigers went on to win in overtime, 13-12, on a behind-the-head breakaway goal by senior defenseman Colin Dunn with 2:57 left.
