2007 All-Metro Girls Indoor Track teams

Girls Performer of the Year

The senior used her outstanding speed and athleticism to become the catalyst for the Doves this season, filling the void left by the graduation of last season's Performer of the Year Theresa Lewis and first-team All-Metro pick Shalaiyah Sommerville.

Wright won four gold medals to help Western win the City title, and then duplicated that performance at the regional meet.

At the state championships, she tied a meet record with her time of 7.08 seconds in the 55-meter dash, and also won the 300 and placed third in the 55 hurdles. Her effort helped the Doves finish third in the Class 4A-3A state meet.

Wright, who is undecided on a college, will help the Doves attempt to defend their Class 3A state title in outdoor track.

North Carroll

MacDonald and Johnson have worked hard to build the Panthers into a strong, balanced program. The balance proved crucial at the state meet, where North Carroll got points in field events and running events to capture the Class 3A-2A state championship.

Led by All-Metro first team selections Katie Hursey and Jess Huber, North Carroll also won the Carroll County and Class 3A-2A West regional crowns in impressive fashion.

Seton Keough

The junior led the Gators to the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland championship. She contributed 36 points as Seton Keough won its first team title.

Brooks won the 55-meter dash and the triple jump and took second in the long jump and the 300. She also was a first-team All-Metro pick last year in outdoor track.

Jameice DeCoster

McDonogh

The sophomore is quickly becoming one of the area's top track and field athletes, and her versatility has given an already-strong McDonogh team even more weapons.

DeCoster won the 300-meter dash, finished third in the 55 and ran on relays at the IAAM championship meet. Later at the Nike Indoor Nationals in Prince George's County, she ran the state's second-best time in the 200 (25.34 seconds), according to runningmaryland.com.

Jess Huber

North Carroll

The junior repeated as the Class 3A-2A state titlist in the pole vault. She also pulled off an impressive sweep in the big meets.

Huber came away with victories in the Carroll County, regional, Monocacy Valley Athletic League Chesapeake Conference and state meets. Her vault of 10 feet, 1 inch was the state's best this winter and her efforts helped North Carroll win its first state title.

Katie Hursey

The senior ended her indoor career by winning twice at the Class 3A-2A state meet and helping the Panthers to their first indoor state title. Hursey beat rival Liz McCarter of Mount Hebron to pull out the 1,600 early in the meet, a win that seemed to jump-start the Panthers that night.

Hursey later won the 3,200 and ran on a third-place relay team. She's headed to Syracuse next year -- with McCarter -- and will again be a top distance runner this spring.

McCarter continued rolling this winter after winning the Class 3A state title in cross country. The senior pulled off the difficult sweep of the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 in the Howard County title meet, which helped the Vikings to an easy win.

After that came victories in the 800 and 1,600 in the Class 3A-2A West regional meet. McCarter then won the 800 at the state meet and finished second to future Syracuse teammate Katie Hursey of North Carroll in the 1,600.

Alyssa McClure

Digital Harbor

Although she's just a freshman, McClure made a huge impact this season. Her success at the state meet helped the Rams win their first state title (Class 2A-1A).

She accounted for 20 of the team's 50 points, as the Rams edged Poolesville for the title. McClure finished second in both the 55 and the 300, and fifth in the 500 and 800.

Kate Paczynski

Liberty

The junior high jumper came up with big performances at crucial times. She edged Morgan Holmes from Boonsboro (on fewer misses) to win the Class 2A-1A state title with a mark of 5 feet.

Paczynski finished second (on misses) to Devin Meade of North Carroll at the same height at the Carroll County meet. She also finished third at the Class 2A-1A West regional meet, also at 5 feet.

Chante Sandiford

McDonogh

Sandiford's throw of 40 feet, 6 inches in the shot put was the state's best this season.

The senior, who will play soccer at Villanova next year, also can help the Eagles in other ways, like running relays. Sandiford will do some of that and work on the discus in the spring.

Torrie Saunders

Annapolis

She and Jessica Tongue combined to be a potent combination for the Panthers. Saunders took second in the 55 dash and the 55 hurdles in the Class 3A-2A meet.

She also ran on relays this season, and she and Tongue combined for 26 of the team's 34 points at the state meet, helping the Panthers take second place. The junior suffered close losses in both of her state races.

Jessica Tongue

Annapolis

Tongue had been a basketball player, but she was convinced to try track and she ended up becoming a state champion. The junior won the Class 3A-2A 55-meter state championship in 7.21, edging teammate Torrie Saunders (7.29).

Tongue also helped on relays and sparked the Panthers to a second-place finish at the state meet.

Paris Williams

Aberdeen

Track is not an official sport in Harford County, but Williams still made a big impact, winning the 300 and 500 at the state meet.

The senior's time of 1 minute, 14.58 seconds in the 500 set a state record. She also pulled off a sweep of those two events at the Class 3A-2A Central regional meet.
