Dulaney's Eric Walz was named Gatorade Maryland Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year. Walz is now a finalist for the national award, to be announced this month. The 5-foot-11, 130-pound senior raced to the Class 4A West Regional individual championship this past season with a time of 16 minutes, 6.05 seconds, leading the Lions to a state title. The 2015 Baltimore Sun All-Metro Boys Runner of the Year, Walz also took 10th at the Nike Cross Nationals Southeast Regional championships with a time of 15:29.
Cousins is NFL writers' co-Most Improved Player
Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins was one of two players to be named the NFL's Most Improved Player of the Year by the Pro Football Writers of America. He shared the award with Carolina Panthers cornerback Josh Norman. Cousins set the franchise record with 4,166 passing yards in a single season. He completed 69.8 percent of his passes for 29 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in his first full season as a starter. Cousins played six games in the 2014 season, recording 1,710 passing yards, 10 touchdowns, nine interceptions and a 86.4 quarterback rating.

Women's college basketball: No. 5 Maryland has rescheduled its game against No.21 Michigan State for Monday at 6 p.m. at the Xfinity Center. Maryland's game at Penn State has been moved from Tuesday night to Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Bryce Jordan Center in University Park, Pa. … Towson pulled to within three with 57 seconds to play after trailing by as many as 16 points but fell to visiting James Madison, 64-57, on Friday afternoon. The Dukes (12-5, 5-1 Colonial Athletic Association) went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line in the final 20 seconds. Women's college lacrosse: Towson was picked in the Colonial Athletic Association preseason poll of head coaches to finish second to James Madison. Senior midfielder Breanna Hamm and senior defender Emily Roth (Severn) were named to the All-CAA preseason squad. The preseason team also included James Madison senior attacker Betsy Angel (Roland Park), Delaware junior attacker Jamie Schwartz (Mount Hebron) and Elon sophomore midfielder Stephanie Asher (Glenelg).
College wrestling: Sophomore No. 18 Jadaen Bernstein (174) and senior No. 15 Matthew Miller (John Carroll) won as host Navy (8-1) beat Maryland, 24-18, on Friday afternoon. Freshman Brendan Burnham (165) and redshirt sophomore Dawson Peck (285) turned in pins for the Terps (4-9). Navy earned three bonus point victories and won three out of the final four bouts to move to 8-1 on the season.
Men's college soccer: Lycoming sophomore defender Kyle Thomas (C. Milton Wright) and Salisbury goalkeeper Drew Staedeli (Mount Hebron) were named to the D3soccer.com All-America second team.
Boxing: Gary Russell of Capitol Heights lost, 3-0, to Great Britain's Pat McCormack in a light welterweight matchup Thursday night in a World Series of Boxing match between the USA Knockouts and British Lionhearts in Miami.
