When Rob Moy got to Atholton four years ago, the Raiders were more a project than a team. With a core group of freshmen, Moy saw his team compile a 2-13 record his first season, followed by a 3-11 record the next year. This season, the Raiders were 14-4 and became the only area team to win a state title, with a four-set victory over Damascus in the Class 3A state championship game.
"I could see them getting better," Moy said. "I knew we were getting to the point [of being state title contenders]. I just didn't know it would be so soon."
The Raiders played seven of the top 15 teams in the area and kept improving as the season progressed.
The team survived a five-set thriller, including a 34-32 loss in the fourth set, to defeat then third-ranked Mount Hebron in the region final.
"That really should have been the state championship," Moy said. "I was fortunate to be able to coach these girls, and I got tremendous support from the parents and the administration at Atholton. It was an incredible season."
