Mount Saint Joseph's Jalen Smith repeats as state's Gatorade Player of the Year

A year after the Mount Saint Joseph basketball team swept the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference and Baltimore Catholic League titles, about the only thing Jalen Smith hasn’t won this season is a team championship.

The Gaels’ star senior forward on Thursday was named Gatorade Player of the Year for Maryland for the second straight year. Smith, already named a McDonald’s All American and two-time BCL Player of the Year, is averaging 22.2 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks while shooting 62 percent from the field this season.

Gatorade also notes that Smith has a 3.58 GPA and has volunteered as an elementary-school tutor and as a mentor for students with special needs.

The five-star Maryland signee also was the only local player named Thursday to the prestigious Jordan Brand Classic, which will be held April 8 at Barclays Center in New York. Mount Saint Joseph’s Pat Clatchey will be one of his coaches.

Smith will play on the same team as Duke recruits R.J. Barrett, Zion Williamson and Cam Reddish, considered the top three prospects in the Class of 2018.
