Winter strikes again, closing schools Tuesday, postponing Class 3A, 4A state track meets

MIAA B Conference basketball final moved to Wednesday

Tuesday morning's icy weather forced public school officials around the metro area to close schools, so the state Class 3A and 4A indoor track championships have been postponed until next week.

State officials announced Tuesday that the state 3A and 4A track meets would be moved to Feb. 23 at 4 p.m. at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex in Landover.

Monday's state Class 1A and 2A championships also were postponed because of snow and icy roads. Those meets will be run Monday at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex beginning at 4 p.m.

Schools in Baltimore City, Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, Harford and Howard counties were closed Tuesday making this the third straight weekday that after-school events have been canceled in most jurisdictions because of winter weather. Friday's events were postponed in Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll and Howard counties in anticipation of light snow that didn't materialize until later than expected. Some basketball games were made up Saturday, but some have yet to be played.

Teams have until Feb. 22 to finish basketball games that will count toward their playoff seeding, but they can make up games through Feb. 25. The sectional playoffs begin Feb. 26.

In boys basketball, today’s Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association B Conference championship game featuring Annapolis Area Christian and St. John’s Catholic Prep has been moved to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Archbishop Spalding.
