The Basketball Academy moves back to a college campus, Morgan State, for the 17th annual event that combines academic and service learning with three days of top-notch high school girls and boys basketball action from Jan. 24 to 26.
Last year, the Basketball Academy was moved to Lake Clifton after an NCAA rule change banned "nonscholastic" high school basketball events from Division I college campuses. Even then Academy officials were certain that the scholastic component of their event -- which mandates all student participants take classes in SAT preparation, financial literacy, gang awareness and/or bullying prevention -- would allow it back on a college campus.
“The Basketball Academy has remained resilient over the years because of its unique academic components and workshops, its outstanding presenters and a concept that is different from any other three-day tournaments or mixers of this nature,” said Bob Wade, Basketball Academy co-founder and coordinator of athletics for the Baltimore City public schools, in a news release. “The Basketball Academy has improved over the years due to the various partnerships that have been developed with outstanding corporate sponsors and civic organizations.”
Fourteen of The Baltimore Sun’s Top 15 girls and boys teams will participate. The boys competition includes No. 3 Dunbar, No. 4 Milford Mill, No. 6 City, No. 8 Poly, No. 10 Edmondson, No. 13 Lake Clifton, No. 14 Randallstown and No. 15 Patterson, while the girls games include No. 2 Aberdeen, No. 4 Poly, No. 5 Digital Harbor, No. 10 Milford Mill, No. 11 City and No. 12 Patterson Mill.
Tickets, which can be purchased in advance at participating schools, are $10 per day with children under 5 free.
