Mount Saint Joseph forward Jalen Smith had a big junior year, winning All-Metro Co-Player of the Year honors and Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference and Baltimore Catholic League championships.
Now his college list is getting smaller. The 6-foot-9 Smith, rated the No. 24 overall recruit and a five-star prospect in the Class of 2018 in the 247Sports.com Composite rankings, told Rivals.com that five schools have begun to stand out.
Maryland, long considered the favorite to land Smith, was listed alongside Virginia, Syracuse, Miami and Villanova. Smith said in the interview with Rivals.com that the Terps have "a great program. I really like how coach [Mark] Turgeon coaches the players and treats them the same way that he would treat everyone else. He is making sure they are working hard every practice, but I really like how they’re involved with their academics life.”
Smith, who will play on the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League this summer with Team Takeover, said he plans to pare his list further in late July or early August.
