With just three weeks left in the regular season, a lot of things can change in the regional football playoff standings as teams jostle for the four post-season berths in each region. Seven local teams top their regions, including the Baltimore area’s three remaining unbeaten teams – Arundel, Westminster and River Hill.
Quite a few teams, however, need critical wins down the stretch to keep their seasons going into mid-November. The standings are not based only on win-loss records but on point averages. Teams get more points for beating opponents with good records than for beating teams with poor records.
Class 4A East
Arundel (7-0) holds onto first place, followed by defending state champ Old Mill (6-1) and three 5-2 teams. Broadneck is third with South River, fourth, and Meade, fifth.
Class 4A North
Westminster (7-0) has nearly a two-point lead over Sherwood (5-2) while Catonsville (5-2) is third and Blake (4-3) is fourth. Perry Hall (4-3) is fifth.
Class 3A North
Milford Mill’s win over Hereford Saturday secured the top spot this week with a slight edge over Franklin, which is also 6-1. C. Milton Wright (6-1) is third followed by Hereford (5-2). Three more 5-2 teams are looking to break into the top four – fifth-place Patterson; sixth-place North Harford, which plays C. Milton Wright Thursday night; and Parkville, which plays Franklin on Saturday.
Class 3A East
Defending state champ River Hill (7-0) holds onto the top spot, but Atholton (6-1) is less than three tenths of a point behind after beating Mount Hebron Friday. Mount Hebron (5-2) is third followed by three 4-3 teams – Reservoir, fourth; Howard, fifth; and Wilde Lake, sixth.
Class 2A North
Edmondson (6-1) has the edge over Owings Mills (6-1) by three one hundredths of a point. Douglass (4-3) is third and Dundalk (5-2), fourth.
Class 2A East
Fallston dropped to fifth place despite a 6-1 record. Queen Anne’s (7-0) is first followed by Kent Island (7-0). Wicomico and Elkton (both 6-1) are tied for third.
Class 2A West
South Carroll and Century are both 4-3, but South Carroll is in fourth place by less than three tenths of a point over the Knights. Middletown (7-0) is first with Walkersville (7-0), second, and Poolesville (5-2), third.
Class 1A South
Defending state champion Dunbar (6-1) has nearly a three-point lead on second place DuBois (5-1) with Surrattsville (5-2), third, and Forestville (4-3), fourth. Southside (4-3) is a close fifth.
Class 1A North
Overlea, Lewis and Northwestern are all 6-1, but Overlea is tied for first with New Town (5-2) while Lewis is third and Northwestern, fourth. Manchester Valley (5-2) is a close fifth.
