It didn't take long for the first big upset in the Baltimore area in boys basketball.

St. Vincent Pallotti, which finished as runner-up in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association B Conference last season, stunned A Conference powerhouse Mount St. Joseph, 79-73, in its opener Monday.

The Panthers have a stong returning group from last year's team that fell to Gilman in the B title game and they went right to work, building a big lead and then holding off the Gaels for the win.

Senior guards Marcus Scott (27 points) and Jeff Holland (17 points) led the way and junior forward Tariq Owens dominated inside with a 16-point, 10-rebound performance.

"We've been preparing very hard with great summer and fall leagues and we believe in ourselves, but to get a win like this early in the season does wonders for our confidence," Pallotti coach Shae Johnson said. "We tell them if we play together and aren't selfish, we could create a whole lot of mismatch problems. So last night it was great watching them help each other and play so well."

The Panthers return to the court tonight when they travel to Mount Carmel.
