Mount St. Joseph has named alum Stephen Berger as its varsity lacrosse coach, the school announced Friday.

Berger, a 2000 grad who went on to play at Washington College, replaces former coach David Slafkosky.

Berger, a three-time All-American at Washington College, currently plays attack for the Boston Cannons of Major League Lacrosse and serves as the men’s game director at US Lacrosse, the sport's governing body.

“I am thrilled for the opportunity to return to my roots and encourage a love of lacrosse at the high school level,” Berger said in a news release. “Mount St. Joseph helped turn me into the man, and lacrosse player, that I am today. To give back to a school that provided me with both a solid academic and athletic base is another way for me to share my passion for the sport.”

He will continue to serve as men’s game director for US Lacrosse while coaching at Mount St. Joseph. Slafkosky spent four seasons as head coach and led the Gaels to an 8-10 mark this spring.
