COLLEGE PARK -- After a one-year hiatus, Mount Mat Madness will be back next season.
Neil Aldelberg, president of the Maryland State Wrestling Association, said Friday night at the MPSSAA state tournament that he is bringing the event back Dec. 28-29 at UMBC.
"I'm here tonight scouting for standout wrestlers who would like to be part of the tournament," said Aldelberg, who created and runs Mat madness. "When I find kids who want to wrestle the best, I'll approach their coaches about coming to the tournament."
Aldelberg said he has already had more than 20 teams call to inquire about participating. He said he plans to limit the field to 30 teams.
Among those expected are host Mount St. Joseph, LaPlata, Dallastown (Pa.), Urbana, Hartford Tech and Glenelg.
The tournament's dates conflict with the McDonogh Duals, but Aldelberg said he expects Archbishop Curley, Boys' Latin and perhaps other private schools to come to Mat Madness.
The tournament wasn't held this season because Aldelberg said it was too much work and he needed a break. Asked about that Friday, he said, "I did take a break. I took this year off. My wife said I have to get out of the house and I've had a lot of people say they'll help me with the tournament next season. So, Mount Mat Madness is back."Copyright © 2015, The Baltimore Sun
