After a suspenseful final day of the regular season Tuesday, the stage is set and seedings are down for the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference boys lacrosse playoffs.
Friday’s quarterfinals will feature sixth seed and No. 7 Loyola (10-8, 3-6 in the MIAA) traveling to third seed and No. 3 Gilman (12-3, 7-2), while fifth seed and No. 5 St. Paul’s (15-4, 5-4) visiting third seed and No. 4 Calvert Hall (10-5, 6-3), with both games set for 4 p.m.
Top seed and No. 1 Boys’ Latin (19-0, 9-0) and second seed and No. 2 McDonogh (15-2, 8-1) earned opening round byes and will open postseason play in Tuesday’s semifinals at Towson University.
Gilman will look to rebound from Tuesday’s 10-6 loss to McDonogh, which kept them from receiving an opening-round bye. Loyola took a backdoor in grabbing the final playoff spot. The Dons lost to Calvert Hall, 12-5, on Tuesday, but still reached the playoffs when Mount St. Joseph upset No. 11 St. Mary’s, 9-8.
During the regular season, Gilman came away with a 13-10 win over Loyola on April 30. The Greyhounds got two goals from five players in the win.
If the Calvert Hall-St. Paul’s playoff game is anything like the regular season game, buckle your seat belt. The defending league champion Cardinals got a goal from Carson Dutkanych with 2:51 to play -- his third of the game -- to seal a 13-12 win on April 9. St. Paul’s, which got a four-goal, one-assist effort from Mikey Wynne, went into the game with a 9-0 mark.
Tuesday’s semifinal games at Johnny Unitas Stadium will take place at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. with the championship game set for 8 p.m. on Friday, May 17.
