On a spring break trip to Florida, the No. 1 McDonogh girls lacrosse team opened its season Wednesday with a 12-8 win at Vero Beach to extend its winning streak to 92 games.
In a showdown of the top two teams in the nation in the Student Sports FAB 50, the Eagles ran up a 6-1 lead and never trailed against the Indians (9-1) before an announced crowd of 2,000 at Vero Beach’s football stadium. The game was a rematch of last year’s season opener when the Eagles had to come from behind to win, 12-6.
“Today we came out and played composed,” Eagles coach Chris Robinson said. “They run a zone defense and we were really patient against that and built up a 6-1 lead. In the second half, they made a nice run at us and got within a couple of goals, but Megan Whittle scored a break-away goal and we were up three or four the rest of the way."
Whittle, rated the No. 1 player in the Class of 2014 by Student Sports, scored that goal with 16:35 left in the game for a 9-6 lead. The senior All-Metro attacker headed for Maryland led the Eagles with five goals.
Kelsey Cummings had two goals and an assist while Elizabeth George had a goal and two assists. Brindi Griffin had a goal and an assist. Miranda McCoy had one goal and Andie May contributed an assist.
The Eagles, who have not lost since April 2009, have won five straight Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference titles. After sustaining significant losses to graduation, they faced a veteran team that had already played nine games.
"We lost 17 kids to graduation, so it was a young group, but they grew up quick tonight," Robinson said.
The Eagles face Georgetown Visitation from Washington, D.C., Thursday night and Pennsylvania state champ Harriton Friday night in Florida. Georgetown Visitation, which lost to Vero Beach, 16-15, Tuesday night, is ranked No. 10 by Student Sports. Harriton is No. 8.
