McDonogh boys soccer standout George Campbell has been selected the 2013 High School National Player of the Year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

Campbell, a senior midfielder and The Sun's All-Metro Player of the Year, finished with 23 goals and 15 assists to lead the No. 1  Eagles (20-0-1) to the program's seventh Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference championship and its first unbeaten season.

McDonogh finished as the country's No. 1 team in the Students Sports Fab 50 Poll and No. 10 nationally in the NSCAA Adidas Poll.

"He definitely deserves the honor," McDonogh coach Steve Nichols said. "He's probably the best all-around player we've had here at McDonogh.  He's a player that can attack and defend, and is as technically and tactically sound as any player I've had in my 20 years at McDonogh.

"You put that all together and he can change a game in so many ways with all the different things he can do."

Campbell, who has committed to Maryland, will be recognized at the NSCAA Awards Banquet on Friday, Jan. 17 in Philadelphia.  He's the first McDonogh player to receive the award.

Nichols was selected the NSCAA's Boys Private/Parochial School National Coach of the Year this week.
