Maryland wins to reach Heartland Classic semifinals, then falls to Texas

With a 9-8 win over Georgia in the first game of the elimination round Friday, Maryland advanced to face top seed Texas in the semifinals of the Heartland Classic baseball tournament in Norman, Okla.

There, Maryland lost, 11-3, and was eliminated from contention for the championship. They'll face host Oklahoma in the third-place game at 1 p.m. EDT today.

In the first game Friday, Maryland jumped out to an 8-1 lead and then held off Georgia's late rally -- four runs in the bottom of the sixth and three runs in the bottom of the seventh -- for the victory.

Peter Solomon (Mount St. Joseph) earned the win after holding No. 4 seed Georgia to one unearned run, two hits and three walks in four innings.

In the semifinal game, Texas used a seven-run second inning to mount an early 9-1 lead.

Jay Patti (Hereford) led Maryland with two hits, and Brady Policelli (Walkersville) scored two runs in the loss.

Maryland, which failed to win a game and finished in last place in last year's Heartland Classic, has a 4-4 record heading into today's third-place game.
