Despite not allowing an earned run, Maryland split its two games Tuesday to start this year's Heartland Classic baseball tournament in Norman, Okla.
Tayler Stiles (Bishop McNamara) set a tournament record for strikeouts in a seven-inning game with 16 as Maryland defeated Georgia, 3-0, to rebound from an earlier 3-2 loss to host Oklahoma.
Stiles, who will play at Maryland next season, allowed two hits and walked two batters in the complete-game victory.
The state's high school all-star team rallied to tie its first game Tuesday in the top of the seventh inning, but Oklahoma scored its third unearned run of the game in the bottom of the frame for a one-run victory.
Trailing, 2-1, heading into the top of the seventh, Brady Acker (Atholton) scored on a sacrifice fly from Zach Correa (St. Michaels) to tie at 2.
Oklahoma, however, scored the game-winning run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.
Andy Szamski (Eastern Tech) was 2-for-3 with a double in the loss for Maryland, while Robbie Metz (Poolesville) had an RBI.Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
