Right fielder Andy Szamski (Eastern Tech) homered in his first two at-bats to lead a 17-hit attack as Maryland beat host Oklahoma, 16-7, to finish in third place in the Heartland Classic baseball tournament in Norman, Okla.
Szamski was 2-for-3 with the two home runs and five RBIs as Maryland finished with a 5-4 record in the five-day tournament.
Second baseman Jay Patti (Hereford) and first baseman Andrew Yacyk (North Hagerstown) also homered for Maryland, which jumped to a 12-0 lead with seven runs in the top of the first inning and five in the top of the second.
Maryland third baseman Brady Policelli (Walkersville) and designated hitter Justin Morris each had three hits, while center fielder Brady Acker (Atholton) was 2-for-4 with a walk and three runs scored.
With the win, Maryland placed third in the Heartland Classic -- the state's best showing in the tournament since the inaugural year in 2010 when Maryland finished as the runner-up to Georgia.Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
