Gilman has petitioned for its basketball team to make the jump to the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference after competing in the league's B Conference.
The school has applied to the conference's competition committee, which will consider the petition at a meeting set for March 18. After capturing the B Conference championship in the 2011-12 season, the Greyhounds went 16-15 this season and advanced to the title game this year.
After upsetting top-seeded Boys' Latin in the semifnals, they fell to St. Vincent Pallotti in the championship game, 62-55, on Feb. 17 at UMBC.
The school currently has 14 of its 16 sports programs competing in the A Conference, with basketball and ice hockey as the two playing in the B Conference.
"We would love to say all 16 are competing at the highest level and believe we have the school population to compete in the A Conference in all varsity sports," said Gilman athletic director Tim Holley.
There are no plans for the ice hockey team to make the move to the A Conference this year, Holley added.Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
