Franklin football grabs national MaxPreps ranking for medium schools

Franklin's football team received a No. 12 national ranking in MaxPreps preseason medium school rankings announced Tuesday.

The Indians, who won their first state championship last season, return 18 starters including several of the area's best players.

American Heritage, from Plantation, Fla., earned the top ranking among schools with 1,000 to 2,000 students. Last season, Booker T. Washington, which is No. 2 this preseason, finished as the top team in the MaxPreps Xcellent 25.

Among the players returning for the Indians, who start practice Aug. 13 and open their season Sept. 5 at Calvert Hall, are junior All-Metro wide receiver Steven Smothers, a highly-recruited speedster who scored two touchdowns in last year's 20-7 state Class 3A title victory over Linganore at M&T Bank Stadium.

Also back are senior All-Metro offensive lineman Patrick Allen, who committed to Georgia Monday, and senior quarterback Jacquez Adams and All-Metro defensive back/wide reciever Jordan Adams, twins who have both committed to West Virginia.
