Catholic High School runner Ellie Gonzalez placed second in the high school girls championship mile at the Penn Relays last week in Philadelphia.

Gonzalez, The Baltimore Sun's Athlete of the Year in 2013, finished the race in 4 minutes, 47.26 seconds -- eighth fastest in the relays' history.

Amelia Paladino of University High School Morgantown, W.Va., won in 4:45.34. Eight high school girls finished the mile race in under five minutes.

An All-Metro first-team pick after the cross country and indoor track seasons this academic year, Gonzalez plans to run at Dartmouth next year.
