Eastern Tech scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to knock off the defending Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A conference champion, Seton Keough, 3-2, on Monday morning.
The victory, coupled with a pair of losses by last week's top-ranked team, Chesapeake-Anne Arundel, propelled Eastern Tech into the top spot of the Baltimore Sun poll.
Eastern Tech’s Jordan Cargile pitched a complete game, allowing just one earned run on six hits with 11 strikeouts and a walk. Seton Keough’s Hannah Tavik was also dominant, allowing three runs on three hits with 11 strikeouts.
After trailing by a run in the eighth, Eastern Tech tied the game on a sacrifice bunt by senior shortstop Nicole Dell. Cargile then was able to earn a walk with the bases loaded to pull out the victory.
"We faced a nice pitcher today that moved the ball around the plate on different pitches," Eastern Tech coach Jack Meyers said of Tavik. "Jordan kept us in the game with her pitching. Nice to see hard work pays off for her and the team. "
