The Susan G. Komen-funded Breast Link program at St. Agnes Hospital is raising awareness about breast cancer at upcoming football games in Baltimore City in an initiative called Sports Link, according to a news release. The program will be on hand at Edmondson on Friday when the Red Storm hosts Forest Park at 3:45 p.m.
Players, cheerleaders, and parents will be provided with Breast Link gear to wear during games in order to spread awareness of the program.
The program will provide the teams with pink Breast Link socks (for players), hair bands (for players and cheerleaders), and scarves (one for each player/cheerleader to give to a parent or family member in the crowd). An information table with relevant sources on clinical breast exams, mammograms, and breast health will be set up with professional staff available to provide linkage information. The table will also feature face painting and cotton candy. Speakers will be on hand at halftime to discuss the program and breast health.
The goal of the program is to provide free mammograms for women age 40 and over in the community. The program will pay for Diamond Cab to pick up clients (in zip codes 21223, 21229, and 21230) and treat her to lunch. If the client is without insurance, Breast Link will pay for her wellness exam and her mammogram. The goal is to have 300 women complete mammograms by March 2014.
In addition to the Forest Park-Edmondson football game, the program is scheduled to appear in three other games:
Digital Harbor at Northwestern, Oct. 11, 3:45 p.m.
Northwestern at Reginald F. Lewis, Oct. 25, 3:45 p.m.
Reginald F. Lewis at Digital Harbor, Nov. 1, 5:45 p.m.
