Brady Acker's grand slam lifts Maryland over Arkansas, 5-1, in Heartland Classic

Brady Acker (Atholton) hit a grand slam in the top of the first inning Wednesday as Maryland won, 5-1, over Arkansas in the Heartland Classic baseball tournament in Norman, Okla.

Ryan Selmer (Riverdale Baptist) earned the victory after allowing one run and four hits in seven innings. He struck out three batters and walked three.

Andrew Yacyk (North Hagerstown) also had an RBI single in the first inning as Maryland bounced back from a 10-run loss in its first game during the second day of the tournament.

In that game, Texas scored four runs in the top of the third inning and four more in the top of the fourth to beat Maryland, 11-1, in five innings.

Brady Policelli (Walkersville) scored Maryland's only run after hitting a single in the first inning. Justin Morris (DeMatha) and Andy Szamski (Eastern Tech) each had a single for Maryland, which had only those three hits in the loss.

Alex Kennedy (Catoctin) started for Maryland, and he allowed six runs, five hits and three walks in 2 2/3 innings.

Eli Ginsburg (Hereford) relieved Kennedy, and he gave up five runs, five hits and two walks while striking out two batters in 1 2/3 innings.

Maryland is 2-2 after the first two days of the tournament, with games against Ohio and Colorado scheduled for Thursday.

The elimination round begins Friday, and the championship game is scheduled for Saturday at 4:30 p.m. EDT.
