Boys lacrosse top-five countdown: No. 1 Boys' Latin

The Baltimore Sun

The boys lacrosse season has started for the private schools, and the public schools will begin play on Friday. That means it’s time to start rolling out the projections for this season’s top teams.

In the coming days, Varsity Letters will count down the top-five teams. The area's preseason No. 1-ranked team will be posted Wednesday. The entire Top 15 poll, along with the top players to watch, will be available online Wednesday night and the entire preview package will be in Thursday's print edition.

Here’s a look at No. 1 Boys Latin

Coach: Bob Shriver

Last season: 19-1, ranked No. 2

Postseason: Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference final

Top players: Shack Stanwick, Sr., A; Tal Bruno, Sr., M; Colin Chell, Sr, A; Hunter Moreland, Sr., M

Outlook: Last year’s upset loss to Loyola in the MIAA championship game – spoiling the Lakers’ bid for a perfect season – still stings. A senior-laden roster knows winning it all this season is the best cure.

The combination of talent and motivation makes the Lakers the team to beat in what should be a balanced MIAA this spring.

Stanwick is the area’s most complete attackman with an ability to score, assist and do anything else needed to bring home wins. He has plenty of support with Chell a capable finisher in close and Bruno and Keegan O’Connor anchoring a deep midfield.

While most MIAA team are grooming new faceoff men, the Lakers have a quality returner in Moreland to give the attack the ball.  Standouts on defense and in the cage have graduated, so new faces will have to step up.

The Lakers are hungry and overdue, and have the pieces in place to claim the program’s first MIAA crown since 2006.
