A promising boys basketball season is upon us, so let's take a closer look at some of the finest teams in the area and what we can expect from each.
Running through tomorrow, we’ll count down to No. 1 with a detailed daily roll of the area’s top five teams.
Coach: Cyrus Jones
Last season: 24-3, No. 1
Postseason: 1A champion
Outlook: The Poets have a brand new look this season with five new starters from last year's team that captured its third straight Class 1A title and the Baltimore City crown.
But much of the same quality results are expected with a new cast of high talent expected to be capable of filling the void.
The biggest new name is senior combo guard Daxter Miles, who is considered the area's top player with an explosive offensive game. The 6-foot-2 Miles, who played his first two years at Archbishop Curley before playing at IMG Academy in Florida last year, can break down defenders on the way to the basket or hit the long jumpers.
John Carroll transfer Kamau Stokes joins Miles in the backcourt, and the Poets have plenty of size and talent up front as well.
The biggest question for the Poets is how quickly everybody meshes and becomes comfortable with the system. Expect big things early and even bigger things later when the team completely gels.
The Poets will take aim at a Maryland-best 14 state championships.Copyright © 2015, The Baltimore Sun
