The Dunbar boys basketball team has already earned a spot to defend its Baltimore City Division I championship -- this year's title game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Morgan State.
The one question left -- who will the No. 3 Poets play?
A deep and balanced regular season in Baltimore City comes to an end Friday with plenty of excitement as three teams -- No. 6 Edmondson, No. 8 City and No. 12 Poly -- are still in the hunt for the second spot in Tuesday's title game with each 9-2 in league play.
Poly travels to City for a game Friday at 5 p.m., while Edmondson hosts Patterson at the same time.
Here's a breakdown of what each team needs to do on Friday to reach Tuesday's title game against Dunbar:
** Poly, which defeated Edmondson, 76-73, on Jan. 11, gets the berth if it defeats City.
** Edmondson, having defeated City, 61-57, on Feb. 5, would play for the championship if it wins and City beats Poly.
** City gets the nod if it beats Poly AND Patterson upsets Edmondson.
"You can say winning the Baltimore City championship is as big, if not bigger, than winning a state title -- it means a lot to all of us," Poly coach Sam Brand said. "If we win, we're in and we can't ask for anything more. We're excited."
