Arundel grad Smidinger invited to golf in the Challenge at Musket Ridge

Arundel graduate Elyse Smidinger, who won back-to-back girls state golf championships in 2010 and 2011, has been invited to play in the Symetra Tour's Challenge at Musket Ridge on a local exemption.

The tournament, which takes place in Myersville, is set for August 20-26.

Smidinger, who will begin her freshman year at the University of Denver in the fall, also is a three-time Maryland Junior Championship winner. Her career highlight to date came last August at the U.S. Women's Amateur Golf Championships in Rhode Island when, seeded 64th, she upset No. 1 seed Jihee Kim of Korea in the first round.

The Challenge at Musket Ridge is a new event for the Symetra Tour, which is the official developmental tour of the LPGA

"I'm thrilled to accept the invitation to play in the upcoming Challenge at Musket Ridge," Smidinger said in a Symetra Tour news release. "I am looking forward to competing against a world-class field of professionals and to gain valuable experience. Competing in a Symetra Tour tournament will only help me reach my goal of becoming a professional golfer."
