This week, Varsity Letters will take an in-depth look at the boys and girls soccer outlooks in various counties and leagues in the Baltimore area. On Tuesday, Anne Arundel County will be featured. Please be sure to check out the complete boys and girls soccer preview section which will appear online Tuesday night and run in Wednesday's print edition of The Baltimore Sun.
Here's a closer look at the Anne Arundel boys:
Severna Park is the clear favorite following last year’s unbeaten season and Class 4A state title.
The No. 2 Falcons, who went 17-0-2 in 2013, have all the ingredients to defend their crown. It starts with a dynamic one-two punch on offense in Daniel Kwon and Miseker Wingate, and goalie Craig Wishart.
What teams can pose a challenge?
Anne Arundel County is always strong and deep and this year is no exception. But getting past potentially special Severna Park will be a significant challenge for any opponent.
Broadneck, which enters The Baltimore Sun’s Top 15 poll at No. 12, seems the most likely candidate. The Bruins always come ready to play and have a special player of their own in senior midfielder-forward Tyler Gabarra.
The county will feature plenty of quality offensive playmakers, and South River’s Garrett McLendon is another one. The Seahawks have added some quality newcomers, and they could make a serious push if the pieces fall into place.
Meade looks to have the talent to enjoy a breakthrough season.Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
