The annual Anne Arundel Community College Girls Lacrosse Tournament has a new look to it this year -- in more ways than one.
In addition to the format changing to a true tournament with four brackets, the first day of games, Thursday, will be played at Annapolis High School.
For more than 10 years, AACC women's coach Jim Griffiths has hosted the superbly-run Easter-weekend tournament featuring a slate of non-traditional matchups, often private-school teams vs. public-school teams. Severna Park vs. Severn has been one of the marquee games the past few years and the two could meet again this year in their bracket final.
The tournament usually runs one game at a time from 9 a.m. until about 9:30 p.m. Thursday and Saturday. This year, Annapolis coach Dave Gehrdes said, the surplus of winter snow days forced some school systems, including Anne Arundel County, to stay open this week instead of closing for spring break.
Because AACC has only one lighted field, Thursday's games were moved to Annapolis, which has two lighted artificial turf fields and can support two games at a time beginning at 3 p.m.
The tournament will move back to AACC Saturday for a full day of games.
The new format puts teams in four brackets with the semifinals Thursday and consolation and championships on Saturday. In the past, most teams have been matched with two non-traditional rivals while a few have played on just one day.
Two brackets look particularly challenging. The Blue Bracket includes No. 4 Roland Park, No. 6 C. Milton Wright, No. 15 Broadneck and Easton, last year's state Class 2A-1A finalist.
The White Bracket includes No. 8 Severn, Severna Park, Catonsville and Queen Anne's.
Here is the schedule for the tournament. The Busch Complex is part of the Annapolis High campus next to the main stadium.
