McNeil played a big role in Franklin pulling out the Class 3A state championship. She helped win two events late as the Indians pushed past Urbana to win by seven points (73-66).
Franklin trailed by three when McNeil won the 800 (2:17.24). She had taken the 500 (1:15.13) earlier in the meet and then ran with Tylar Colbert, Cameron Hinton and Jasmine Johnson to win the final race of the night, the 1,600 relay (3:57.16), which helped Franklin secure the championship.
McNeil also captured the 400 and 800 outdoors last spring and now has won the state title indoors in the 500 all three years of her high school career.
Franklin coach Paul Hannsen said she's won eight state titles — including relays — and he still is amazed by how often McNeil finds success.
"The thing I've been thinking to myself more this year is we need to appreciate how consistently excellent she has been over the three years and not take what she is doing for granted," he said. "It's definitely not easy to maintain a very high level every time even if you are very good."
