Hereford girls win 2A team title; Pikesville's Brown has big day

Hereford coach Brad Duvall loved the fact that his team won its third state championship on Monday at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex at the state indoor track championships. He just was a little surprised at the way it happened.

The Bulls won the Class 2A girls title without securing a single win in either a relay or an individual event. They just relied on the points, and — in the end — they were there.

"I knew we'd be one of the favorites, but I just didn't think we'd win it this way," said Duvall, whose team also won state titles in Class 3A in 2012 and 2013. "We had some girls step out of their comfort zones tonight, and that was pretty special to see. It bodes well for our future."

The Bulls were the only metro area team to win a title. They ammassed 59 points to hold off Lackey by just three points. South Carroll was third with 36.

The Class 2A boys title went to Westlake, while the boys 1A title went to Fairmont Heights and the 1A girls title to Boonsboro. The Class 3A and 4A championship meets are set for today.

Pikesville's Ellis Brown had one of the best days as an individual. Brown won two events and finished third in another to lead the Pikesville boys to a fourth-place finish in Class 1A.

"I just wanted to do good so my coach wouldn't yell at me," said a smiling Brown.

Brown did more than "good," winning both the 300-meter and 55-meter dashes in Class 1A to lead the Panthers.

"I never even expected to run the 300 entering the season," said Brown. "I was joking with my coach about it, and he said yes to me running it. When I started putting up great times, he told me I didn't have a choice; I was running it."

Brown said he'd been watching the times that had been put up by the other runners, and he knew he had a chance.

"I tried not to worry about my position and just run for the first 200 meters, but then I turned it on and started passing people," he said, noting that he improved upon his personal-best time by .03 seconds.

Brown bested Fairmont Heights' Michale Reyesby by .49 seconds while running a 36.35 in the 300. In the 55 dash, Brown won in a little more comfortable fashion as he ran a 6.65 to defeat Hezikaih Hawkins of McDonough of Charles County, by .12 seconds.

For good measure, Brown rounded out his night with a third place finish in the pole vault.

Also in Class 1A, the North Carroll 4x800 relay team won the state title by posting a time of 8:47.68 to defeat Fairmont Heights, and Edmondson won the 4x200 title in 1:36 and also edging Fairmont Heights.

In Class 1A girls, Manchester Valley's Katie Krebs won the state title in the shot put with a throw of 35 feet, 10 inches.

In Class 2A, the Oakland Mills 4x800 relay team took home a state title. The Scorpions posted a time of 8:24.02 to defeat Largo by just over four seconds for the title. The Scorpions also got a win in an individual event, when Kelsey White ran a 1:07.26 to post a victory in the 500 run.

Century junior Kyle Bryant pole vaulted to a height of 13 feet, 6 inches to win the state title. He beat out Liberty's Braedan Balch for second, and his teammate Seth Jacobs for third. Both Balch and Jacobs had vaults of 13 feet.

His teammate, Alex Stefanick, took the 2A high jump title, clearing 6-4 to win by two inches.

On the girls side, Micah Meekins from Marriotts Ridge won the 300 dash in 39.83. South Carroll got a state champion, when Allison Zolkiewicz ran a 1:17.88 to win the 500 dash.

In the last event of the night, South Carroll's Summer Bingaman won the Class 2A Pole vault with a vault of 11 feet.
