Girls Indoor Track: South Carroll takes three titles at states, places third

Three first-place finishes helped lift South Carroll to third in the Class 2A state indoor track meet.

Despite limited training, South Carroll still knew how to get the job done.

The Cavaliers won the 4x800-meter relay, sophomore Allie Zolkiewicz took the 500 meter run and senior Summer Bingaman set a personal record when she vaulted 11 feet at the Class 2A state meet at Prince George's Sports & Learning Center on Monday.

The gold medals helped the Cavs take third in the team standings with 36 points. Hereford took the title with 59 points, and Lackey was second with 56.

"Both teams did great today," Cavs coach Bill Gerhold said. "Our girls won three events, scored in two others but hats off to Hereford and Lackey. They're good teams and maybe next year we'll be a little deeper. I'm not sure if one team has won more than three events at this competitive level, and it's amazing for our girls to be able to do that."

The state meet was originally supposed to be held Feb. 15 but got postponed due to inclement weather. Regardless, the Cavs used what they could to their advantage.

In the 4x800, the team of Megan O'Neill, Jamie Anderson, Allie Zolkiewicz, and Erin Langille rallied from fourth place to overcome Hereford by 54 seconds to take the title in 9:45.44.

"When states was postponed, we just tried to run as hard as we could regardless," Langille said. "No matter what happened, we would still be happy. All of our training and working through the blizzard took a toll so the little things really gave us an extra push today."

"I was really proud of our 4x8," Zolkiewicz said. "I think it was second best in the county or state so I'm very proud and we got a pretty good split in that."

After the Cavs placed sixth in the 4x400, Bingaman said she didn't expect much from her performance in the pole vault.

"I thought I was done for at the end of the 4x4, but I tried my best despite being really tired," she said. "I just took the time they gave me and vaulted 11 and it was a PR for me, so I was really happy."

Manchester Valey's Katie Krebs has been battling injuries through much of her high school career. Last year, she couldn't compete because they were so conflicting.

Krebs said she has two rare syndromes, chiarimalformation and compartment syndrome. A pinched brain stem in her neck ,she said, causes her to have pain in her legs and she said she gets headaches as a result from the chiarimalformation. Pressure builds in her legs and becomes painful.

This year, the Mavericks senior wanted to close out her indoor career on a high note.

Krebs became a state champion when she threw 35 feet, 10 inches in the 1A shot put, surpassing Perryville's Jarah Cevis' 33-2.

"Having doctors appointments and balancing training has been really hard," Krebs said. "I would do what I can in the weight room with my team and I also watch other throwers. I'm a good observer in that sense so I internalize and see what I can improve on that way."

Krebs' teammate, Kayla Geho, placed third in the event and the two are used to competing alongside each other.

"We've both been dealing with injuries so there are days where practices have been slim to none for us," Krebs said. "She always pushes me and tells me that I don't need to be stressed out about too much. It helps to have fun with it too and watching her growth through the season helps me improve that much more."
