Carroll Varsity Roundup: Defense comes up big for Century field hockey

Century sophomore Maggie Bornyek scored less than 7 minutes into Tuesday’s field hockey contest against Francis Scott Key, and the Knights’ defense did the rest.

They kept the potent Eagles off the scoreboard in a 1-0 Century victory in Eldersburg, giving the Knights a win in their county opener.

Borynek scored off an assist from junior Tierney Hall, and the early goal was the difference. Century coach Jess Goodwin said freshman Kylie Opatovsky anchored her defensive unit to preserve the shutout.

“We were able to play a complete game and get the win,” Goodwin said.

Century’s Claire Hollinger and Rebecca Entwistle combined for eight saves. Kourtney Black had three saves for the Eagles, who fell to 3-1, 0-1.

JV result: Century, 3-0.

South Carroll 7, Aberdeen 0

Recap: At Winfield, Kristin Gruber and Shannon Finch had two goals apiece for the Cavaliers, who improved to 6-1. Madi Radnoff and Julia Weiss each had a goal and an assist.

Liberty 4, Winters Mill 0

Recap: At Eldersburg, the Lions ran their record to 5-2, 1-0 county. The Falcons fell to 2-2-1, 0-1. No information was reported.

Winters Mill 3, Man Valley 2

Recap: At Manchester, the Falcons (3-1, 2-1 county) outlasted the Mavs 25-22, 25-23, 21-25, 22-25, 15-11. Jordan Badorrek had 26 assists and Ashley Bobnar posted 11 kills. Brynn Choplin had nine kills and nine digs. Josey Klingenberg had 22 digs and Kelli Garriott made six blocks for the Mavericks (3-3, 1-3).

Recap: At Eldersburg, the Knights (4-1, 3-1 county) won 25-11, 25-21, 25-14. Melissa Bonzelet had 10 kills and Madison Young added seven. Allyson Windell totaled 11 points from serve.

Recap: At Eldersburg, Quinn McLaughlin netted the lone goal, early in the second half, and the Lions improved to 3-3, 1-0 county. Nick Duvall had the assist, and Justin Ricketts made five saves. Josh Kappes had 15 saves for WM (2-3, 0-1).

Recap: At Eldersburg, Evan Montgomery had the winner in OT off an assist from Alex Grasso for the Knights (3-1-2, 1-0 county). Nathan Perry made eight saves for the Eagles (0-3, 0-2).

Man Valley 2, Westminster 0

Recap: At Westminster, the Mavericks im proved to 6-0 (1-0 county), while the Owls fell to 1-5, 0-1. No information was reported.

Recap: At Uniontown, the Knights won their second in a row (2-4, 1-0 county). Haley Sawyers and Emily Dell combined for 12 saves for the Eagles (0-3, 0-2). Century’s information wasn’t reported.

Cross Country

SC sweeps county quad-meet

Recap: At Winfield, the Cavaliers’ girls team went 1-2-3-4-5 to score 15 points and beat Westminster (63), FSK (71), and Man Valley (100). Danielle Firlie won the race in 22:40.6, followed by Grace Siehler, Kate Yokay, Kelsey Shekore, and Amy Salindong — all freshmen. SC’s Jason Cave won the boys race and the Cavs had 21 points, followed by Westminster (57), MV (63), and Key (106).
