Carroll Varsity Roundup: County sending tennis players onto state tourney

Carroll County Times

The Region VII tennis tournament finished up earlier this week, and Carroll fared well against opponents from Cecil and Harford counties.

The county crowned a pair of singles champions in Century’s Leah Sharkey and Liberty’s Steven Goetz.

Sharkey, a freshman, breezed through her bracket and won all four of her matches by 6-0, 6-0 scores. Sharkey (20-0) beat Manchester Valley’s Ellie Johnson in the final, a rematch of the county tournament championship match. Both players advance to state tournament as the top two in each bracket move on.

Goetz, the Carroll tournament champion, downed Patterson Mill’s Tom Brosh 6-0, 7-6 to capture the boys singles title and run his record to 19-0.

Carroll had the boys doubles champs as well in Century’s Luke Fetterman and John Marcellino. The duo met up once again with Westminster’s Max Seibel and Michael Twery in the finals.

After losing to the Owls’ tandem at counties, Fetterman and Marcellino prevailed this time 7-5, 6-2.

Liberty’s Noelle Htwar and Emily Brecker reached the girls doubles championship match before falling to Patterson Mill’s Brooke Santoriello and Meadow Santoriello 6-0, 6-2. The Lions’ pair is headed to states thanks to their runner-up finish.

Liberty has another doubles team bound for the state tournament — Emily Smith and Josh Kelly placed second in mixed doubles after losing in the finals 2-6, 6-1, 6-1.

The Lions claimed the Region VII team championship based on their overall success.

The state tournament is slated for May 25-26 at Wilde Lake Tennis Club in Columbia.
