McDonogh slightly ahead of Good Counsel heading into final day of MIS tournament

Host McDonogh holds a slim lead over Good Counsel after the first day of the Maryland Independent Schools Wrestling tournament.

No. 1 McDonogh leads all schools with 142 points. The Eagles are followed by Good Counsel (139.5), No. 3 John Carroll (113.5), Georgetown Prep (110.5), and No. 6 Archbishop Spalding (103.5).

The Eagles placed nine wrestlers into Saturday's semifinals, which begin at 11:45a.m. Good Counsel has the second most with eight, followed by Georgetown Prep and John Carroll with seven apiece, and Archbishop Spalding with five.

"We knew good Counsel would be right there with us to the end," McDonogh coach Pete Welch said. "I think the semis will be a big round, along with the wrestlebacks. They will be huge in determining a winner."

Several interesting possibilities remain for the finals. At 145, John Carroll's George Weber, ranked second in the state at that weight, could get another crack at McDonogh's Jack Clark. Clark is ranked No. 1 in the state and in the top 10 in the nation.

The same could happen at 132, where top-ranked Daniel Sanchez of Georgetown Prep is on course to wrestle No. 2 Scott Strappelli of John Carroll. Both are seniors. At 138, Bishop McNamara's Alfred Bannister could wrestler McDonogh's Xavi Ramos. Bannister is ranked No. 1 in the state, while Ramos is No. 2 .

At 126, Jack Mutchnick of St. Paul's, ranked first in the state, could meet No. 13 Mount St. Joseph's Zeke Salvo in the finals. Salvo is currently ranked third in the state.

At 152, Spalding's Logan Breitenbach could meet McDonogh's Toby Hague again in the finals. Breitenbach is ranked No. 1 in the state, while Hague is ranked second.

The tournament will resume at 10 a.m. with the fourth-round wrestlebacks.
