States best wrestlers gather for all-star meet

Archbishop Curley senior Avery Williams didn't waste time accepting an invitation to the Haswell Franklin Maryland State Wrestling Association Senior All-Star Meet.

He said he couldn't refuse the offer and made the best of the event which was held at McDaniel College on Tuesday. Williams walked away as the meet's outstanding heavy weight wrestler.

"I had a lot of fun," Williams said.

Williams pinned both of his opponents Tuesday to increase his pin count for the season to 37.

"I use the Avery Special," said Williams, who pinned his opponents in 2 minutes and 41 seconds and 0:14. "It's a front headlock and a trip."

It might sound harsh, but the only thing that made Williams feel a little bad was that the private schools lost to the class 4A-3A public schools, 54-15.

"I do feel bad about that," he said. "It means a lot. We come out here to represent our league and we didn't quite do that."

The 4A-3A seniors were the overall champions not only beating the private schools , but also taking down their public school class 2A-1A counterparts, 38-24.

Centennial's Nathan Kraisser, the newest of five four-time state champions, was named outstanding wrestler of the lightweights, rolling through his matches with a tech fall (16-1) and a pin.

"It felt good to wrestle in my Centennial singlet one last time," Kraisser said. "It can be a challenge to get up for this event. It comes just two days after states and states are a lot of people's goal. But I hate losing, so that was a driving force for me."

Broadneck's Collin Harrell, the senior who was ejected during the Anne Arundel tournament after getting involved with a conflict between his mother and a school administrator, said participating in the meet was "awesome." The all-star meet was the next best thing for Harrell, who was unable to qualify for the state tournament because of his ejection.

"I was excited and nervous," he said, after winning a close match against class 2A-1A state runner-up Ben Culver of Easton. "I had a lot of emotions, but mostly I was simply thankful to be here."

Winning a match here wasn't the most important thing, however, for a lot of wrestlers. Arundel's Tyler Goodwin did win both of his matches, but said he was excited about participating because of the meet's history and because it will help him stay in shape for other events this spring, including the Dapper Dan in Pittsburgh, which pits the best Maryland and Pennsylvania wrestlers against each other.

Calvert Hall's Matt Crumsaid despite his loss, he was thrilled, "to wrestle the best and see how we'd all match up against the other divisions. I got to wrestle (two-time state champion Alex) Rice. He might be one of the two best I've ever wrestled. [McDonogh's] Jack Clark is the other."
