No. 12 South Carroll wins 2A/1A state wrestling title

It had long been a dream of South Carroll wrestling fans for the Cavaliers to win a state title. Yesterday the Cavaliers finally did that, though they'll have to share.

No. 12 South Carroll used a major decision by Jake Pooton over Fallston's Austin Rutkowski at 182 pounds in its final match to tie Kent Island, 94-94 for the Class 2A/1A state title.

Pooton led the match 7-0 late in the third period, but intentionally let Rutkowski up and gave away a point. He then scored a takedown to give South Carroll an 8-point lead and the major decision it needed to tie the match.

"That was a lot of pressure that we put on him," Cavaliers coach Bryan Hamper said. "I told him to wrestle his match and that came first, but he knew the situation. He's a terrific kid, and he came through when we needed him. It was great to watch."

Hamper said he'll take the split decision and the state title.

"We've finished second here five times. I've experienced it twice as a wrestler, and once as a coach," Hamper said. "Kent Island brought 11 wrestlers here, and we brought seven. All our kids contributed, and I couldn't be prouder."

Mountain Ridge (74.5 points), Catoctin (70) and Middletown (67.5) rounded out the top five among 2A/1A teams.

In another win for Carroll County, North Carroll's Eddie Merrill avenged his loss in the state championship last year, building a big lead and defeating Kent County's Jake Peacock, 7-2, to win the 170-pound title.

"I knew he hadn't seen me, so I decided to try my favorite move, the fireman's carry," said Merrill, who finished his senior season 39-2. "It worked, and I built a 4-0 lead. After that, I calmed down and just wrestled my match."

No. 13 Oakland Mills' Jason Smith won the 160-pound title, defeating Century's Wes Dantzler, 8-2, in the final.

No. 4 Hereford's Brock Turnbaugh was Baltimore County's lone titlist. The senior defeated Fallston's Alex Helm, 11-6, at 220 pounds to win for the Bulls.

In 4A/3A, Howard County was dominant. Wrestlers from the county won seven of eight finals, including six of seven at the 4A/3A level. That was more than any other jurisdiction.

No. 5 River Hill finished second in the 4A/3A tournament with 921/2 points, four points behind champion North Hagerstown. Northern Calvert (81 points), Damascus (80.5), and LaPlata (691/2) rounded out the top five.

The Hawks had a trio of state champions, including Cory Daniel at 220 pounds, Logan Kirby at 195, and Michael Beck at 120.

Daniel defeated Northern Calvert's Kyle Lamond, 6-0, in a match he controlled throughout. Kirby had to work a little harder for his, defeating Casey Wokocha of Eleanor Roosevelt, 8-4. He finished the season 44-1, and will wrestle at Harvard next year. Beck defeated Mount Hebron's Jeff Hayden, 5-2, in his match.

The state title for Daniel was his second in a row (the previous one was at 195) and he finishes his high school career with an 88-0 record the past two years.

"I wrestled [Lamond] in the quarterfinals last year, and he's gotten bigger, stronger, and faster," said Daniel, who will wrestle at North Carolina next year. "He was a worthy opponent. It's been an honor to wrestle at River Hill, and I'm just glad I finished it out the right way."

Howard's Jared Rodriguez scored an escape with less than 30 seconds left to defeat J.D. McKoy of North Hagerstown, 5-4, at 182 pounds. Centennial's Austin Kraisser, a sophomore, finished his season 36-1 and defeated North Hagerstown's Brendon Colbert, 3-1, in the final at 145.

Kraisser narrowly lost in the state championship as a freshman last season. Reservoir's Mason Kilcarr won his first state title, a 5-0 decision over North Hagerstown's Hunter Faith, at 132 pounds.

Anne Arundel County crowned a pair of state titlists.

Annapolis' Stanley Proctor won his first state title, defeating Morgan Way of Urbana, 3-2 at 138 pounds. Meade's Travis Chidebe also won his first title with a 6-3 decision over Northern Calvert's Jackson Drum.
