No. 3 Winters Mill was feeling something special Saturday at the Class2A-1A state dual championships.
The Falcons ran off six pins against No. 8 Owings Mills and had the match won with seven bouts to go. The 66-4 victory at North Point High School in Waldorf gave Winters Mill its first state dual title and only the second ever by a Carroll County school (North Carroll in 1994).
"I knew how badly our kids wanted this," Winters Mill coach John Lowe said. "We were driven after last year's loss in the finals. But I didn't expect this. This is beyond belief."
In the Class 4A-3A final, No. 10 River Hill streaked into a 15-point lead but then couldn't stop Urbana's rally. The Frederick County school won, 36-28.
The Hawks finish the dual season with a 32-7 record, while Urbana is 18-0 and, like Winters Mill, holding the first dual title in its school history.
"I told my guys, if they were going to wrestle like they did in the semifinals [a 27-24 win over North Point] they could just say in the stands and not embarrass us," Urbana coach Ben Ameson said. "Our guys regrouped and finished strong."
But no one was stronger than Winters Mill (32-0).
"It's huge to win a state final by 62 points," Winters Mill senior Gunner Cullison said. "I don't think anyone expected this, but we really wanted to win."
Flavio Valdez-Cortez (106 pounds), Taylor Logue (113), Joel Goode (120), Cullison (132) and Wesley Cook (145) all won with pins, and James Guercio (126) won by technical fall. Cody Sharkey (145) added an overtime, 3-2 decision to make the score 38-0 before Owings Mill's senior Adriene Hazel scored a 13-0 major decision to produce the Eagles' only points of the match.
"We had our butts handed to us," Owings Mills coach Guy Pritzker said. "We didn't match up well, but they beat us where we thought we would win. They outmuscled us. They only way we could have beaten Winters Mill was if we had been able to switch the ankle bands [denoting which wrestler gets the points during the match]."
Things were going so well for Winters Mill that even, Goode, a sophomore, subbed in for an injured started and won his match with a pin. And senior Marshal Chang beat state champion Taran Carr, 6-4, at 160.
"It was so exciting," Goode said. "When your teammates are winning, you try to fight more and wrestle harder."
River Hill advanced to the finals with a 38-31 victory over North Hagerstown that wasn't nearly that close. Once the Hawks built a 38-13 lead they forfeited the last three matches to save their energy for the final.
But after jumping out to a 21-6 lead in the final, Urbana started to be more aggressive.
"Ultimately we just couldn't win as a team," River Hill captain Taariq Mohammed said. "We just fell a little short. It was all cumulative, not the fault of any one individual. Urbana proved it is a great team."
Winters Mill to the 2A-1A final with a 40-33 semifinal victory over Wicomico, while two-seed Owings Mills had to fight to the final match to put away last year's dual meet champion Glenelg, 33-31.
